Bedsores / Pressure Sores
Pressure sores, also known as bedsores, decubitus ulcers or pressure ulcers, are skin lesions that generally form due to constant pressure on parts of the body that are bony. The pressure decreases the blood flow to certain areas, thus causing the tissue to die. These sores can form on any body part, but are found commonly in an individual’s ears, back, elbows, knees, ankles, heels, tailbone, and sacrum.
Numerous risk factors are involved in the development of pressure sores, such as immobility, diabetes, poor hydration and nutrition, and peripheral vascular disease.
Oftentimes, bedsores sores are preventable if caregivers and nursing home staff take appropriate care. Nursing home residents must be constantly turned and repositioned in order to relieve pressure on a particular area of the body. Residents should also be bathed regularly, and be provided appropriate hydration and nutritional support. Devices such as special beds, mattresses, boots and heel protectors may also be used to alleviate pressure in areas that may be at risk.
Federal and Florida laws mandate that all nursing homes and assisted care facilities provide a level of care that ensures the safety and well being of their residents. When nursing homes fail to provide this particular level of care, they may be liable for damages that result from their negligent actions. If a nursing home resident develops pressure sores in a nursing home due to negligence or abuse, either the resident or a family member should take legal action at once.
